Egypt at The Field Museum
The world has been long been fascinated by the allure of ancient Egypt. Napoleon’s expeditions (1799-1801) first introduced Europe to the splendor of Egyptian architecture and art through published illustrations of the country’s many awe-inspiring monuments. Later scientific explorations have only fed the fire with ever more spectacular discoveries of tombs and golden treasures.
If you share in this global fascination for all things Egyptian, you won’t want to miss our permanent exhibition Inside Ancient Egypt. Interactive displays, intricate dioramas, and stunning artifacts allow you to experience the glory and grandeur of ancient Egypt from the pyramid-builders of the Old Kingdom to the Greco-Roman rulers of later years.
Scenic dioramas tell the story of the life-giving waters of the Nile and immerse you in the ecosystem of Egypt. You can even peer into the funerary boat of pharaoh Sen-Wosret III, a remarkably preserved wooden artifact more than 4,000 years old. You’ll also gain an understanding of the history and religious purposes of preserving the dead through mummification, and you’ll stroll through a life-sized tomb of an illustrious pharaoh’s son.
