Exploring an Ancient Tomb

Photo Gallery of Unis-Ankh’s Tomb
Unis-Ankh’s tomb was originally located in Giza near the famous step pyramid of Zoser. Scientists explored and excavated the tomb in 1908, as pictured in the expedition photos below. After excavation, portions of the tomb were purchased by The Field Museum and relocated to Stanley Field Hall on the Museum’s main floor.

As you tour through the tomb, one of your first sights will be its fascinating “false door.” The Egyptians believed that the spirit used this elaborate portal when traveling between the worlds of the living and the dead. For example, it was through this door that Unis-Ankh’s ba (soul) could regularly visit his loved ones left behind on Earth. In addition, his ka (life force) would receive the offerings that priests placed at the door’s altar. These gifts of food, drink, incense, and clothing were intended to nourish and support Unis-Ankh in the afterlife.
