During the most recent Ice Age, when sea level was 120 meters lower than at present, land bridges formed between many islands in the Philippines, although many deep channels remaind. Each of the Ice-Age islands (Sibuyan and Greater Negros-Panay are examples) has a unique set of species of plants and animals.
