2013 REU Program

In 2013, we entered into a partnership with the REU program run by researchers at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Not only did this expand the size of our symposium - a joint symposium held at the Field Museum hosted by the Field Museum REU program and the Chicago Botanic Garden REU program - but, it also expanded our own knowledge regarding scientific research taking place in our area. CBG invited our Field Museum REU interns and staff to the gardens for a tour of their lab spaces and a chance to listen to each of their interns talk about his or her summer research project. We responded in kind, hosting a field trip for the CBG interns to visit us at the Field Museum. As for the symposium, our eight REU interns were joined by nine more interns from the Chicago Botanic Gardens REU interns and our own Field Museum interns working in other programs. We held the symposium in the Simpson Theater and switched from Friday to Saturday in order to make it easier for Field Museum and Chicago Botanic Garden staff to attend and we were not disappointed as the turnout was spectacular. We also decided to expand the poster session and had nineteen Chicago Botanic Garden and Field Museum interns present posters during a 45 minute poster session in the west lobby.
