Chief Marketing Officer
Ray DeThorne joined The Field Museum as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in February 2015. As CMO, DeThorne works with the Museum’s communications, exhibitions, and guest relations staff to transform the visitor experience to a more personal and interactive journey of scientific discovery, drive revenue growth and tell the story of the Museum its scientists and its collections in a compelling manner.
Previously, DeThorne spent much of his career at Leo Burnett, where he drove market success across a varied client list that includes: GM, P&G, Kellogg’s, Tropicana, Allstate, the US Army, ComEd, the Major League Baseball Players Association and Nintendo. He rose to Executive Vice President, Managing Director and was, at one time, the Co-Head of the Account Management Department. He has also acted as a marketing consultant to several Chicago based companies.
A self-professed museum fanatic, DeThorne grew up all over the world as the son of an army officer. This allowed him to visit many of the world’s greatest museums and natural wonders and created in him an appreciation for the natural world and the role of museums.
DeThorne earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Michigan State University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and as the Marketing Committee lead for Ronald McDonald House Charity of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana.
