Enantiornithes were the first major avian radiation, but most people have probably never heard of them. After 15 years of research on this group Jingmai has revealed these birds to be more bizarre than we could ever have imagined. Learn about these strange birds and Jingmai's journey to become a scientist, which begins when her grandmother goes to school as part of the first generation of women to be educated in China. &nbsp;

Women's History Month/Watson-Armour Seminar: Dr. Jingmai O'Connor

Join us this week for a talk by Women's History Month Keynote Speaker&nbsp;<a href="http://www.uva.nl/en/profile/h/o/m.c.hoorn2/m.c.hoorn.html?cb">Dr.&nbsp;Carina Hoorn</a>, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Dr. Hoorn's talk will focus on the cover article in Science magazine January 2023 issue,&nbsp;The Amazon: origins of biodiversity and current threats to its survival.
Amazonia is home to 10% of all named plant and vertebrate species, which are concentrated on about 0.5% of Earth’s surface. To understand the genesis of this biodiversity we must look deep into the past. Sedimentary archives buried hundreds of meters under the surface together with outcrops along the riversides form the history book. These records can tell us how the modern landscape and biodiversity took their shape. In her presentation she will take you on a journey into the past and show some of the reconstructions that were made for the paleogeography and paleobiogeography of the Amazon. She will also reflect on the threats that are posed to the region and highlight some of the possible solutions.
Carina Hoorn is a geologist/paleoecologist and associate professor at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). She holds an MSc (1988) and PhD (1994) from this university, and an MSc (2003) in Science Communication from Imperial College London (UK). In 2021 she was awarded the van Waterschoot van der Gracht medal (2021) for achievements in the field of Earth Sciences, the highest distinction a geologist can receive in the Netherlands
Her main research interest is the Cenozoic evolution of biota and sedimentary environments in mountains and peripheral regions. The regions she is most interested in are Amazonia, the Andes, Tibet, the Himalayas and SE Asia. She enjoys working in research teams, and together with her collaborators studies the Neogene fossil plant record of western Amazonia and the origin and stages of development of the Amazon River. She is also fascinated by the Cenozoic evolution of steppe-desert plants, even more so after spending some time as a research fellow in Xinjiang province, westernmost China. More recently, her curiosity has driven her to explore the fossil record of Myanmar and Indonesia.&nbsp;

Armour Seminar: Dr. Arianna Kuhn

Guillermo Navalon from the University of Cambridge presents the talk The macroevolution of bird skeletons.

Living birds are the most diverse group of land vertebrates with more than 11,000 species. This taxonomic richness is matched by a dazzling diversity of body forms and an extraordinary ecological disparity as they occupy prominent roles across most surface environments in our world. It is well established that living birds are a lineage of theropod dinosaurs and its deep-time origins lie with Archaeeopteryx-like forms living at the end of the Jurassic period. Over this vast period of 150 million years birds experienced a tremendous transformation in their skeletons with key aspects of modern bird anatomy and biology arising at different times and influenced by different factors. My research focuses on unraveling when and how these key features were acquired throughout avian evolutionary history. In my talk, I will dwell in several lines of my current and past research concerning the evolution of: 1) the mindboggling diversity of beaks and skull shapes in the living radiation of birds, 2) the deep-time origins of the very divergent and uniquely complex avian brain; 3) the explosive radiation of skeletal forms in the aftermath of the K-Pg extinction that witnessed the complete demise of non-avian (and many avian) dinosaurs; and 4) a very recent discovery of some key ecological adaptations in enantiornithines, the largest pre-modern avian radiation which produced more species than all the other lineages of Mesozoic birds combined.

Armour Seminar: Guillermo Navalon

Dr. Nadine Naber and Itedal Shalabi will discuss a groundbreaking new study on Arab Americans in the Chicago land area, the community-based research methods, and advocacy outcomes outlined in the report Beyond Erasure and Profiling: Cultivating Strong and Vibrant Arab American Communities in Chicagoland. Dr. Nadine Naber is the leading author of the report and other seminal works on Arab American communities. Itedal Shalabi is the co-founder of Arab American Family Services and played a key role in the development of the report as a community-based partner who assisted with framing, research, and feedback.

This report was created with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, the UIC Award for Creative Activity, and produced in partnership with several Chicagoland Arab American community organizations. The report uses demographic research, surveys, focus group data, and expert commentaries by organizers and academics to analyze how systemic inequities and anti-Arab/anti-Muslim racism affect the lives of Arab Americans in employment, education, health care, housing, and policing. By detailing the challenges facing these communities and making proposals for change, the report serves as a valuable resource for advocates working to build strong and vibrant Arab American communities.

This Armour Seminar is held in conjunction with the Field Museum’s <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/activity/arab-american-heritage-month">Arab American Heritage Month</a> programming.

Armour Seminar: Maurizio Forte

In this session, Zhe-Xi Luo, PhD, Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy, University of Chicago, presents the talk Diversification of Early Mammals in the Age of Dinosaurs.
New fossil discoveries from China and elsewhere have revealed a dazzling of the Jurassic “mammals.” These mammaliaform fossil predecessors to modern Mammalia are now known to have diverse locomotor modes for fossorial, semiaquatic, terrestrial, arboreal, and volant adaptations, with an ecomorphology nearly matching that of extant marsupials.&nbsp; Placed in time-calibrated phylogeny, these fossils show an iterative, convergent evolution.&nbsp; Re-filling of similar morphospace by independent clades, in successive episodes of ecological diversification, appears to be a prevailing pattern of early mammal evolution.

Armour Seminar: Lesley de Souza and Bruno de Medeiros

In this session, Rachunliu Kamei presents the talk Caecilians! Not worms, not eels, not snakes.

Rachunliu “Chun” Kamei is a Naga of the Rongmei tribe from the hills of the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. Chun taught as an Assistant Professor at the University of Delhi for nearly six years before resigning in pursuit of a career in natural history. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Delhi and subsequently obtained a Marie Curie postdoc fellowship at the Natural History Museum, London, focusing on the then under-studied caecilians (legless amphibians) from the poorly explored NER of India. Her field-based research on the caecilians of NER of India&nbsp;
resulted in the most comprehensive study of caecilians from any one region in Asia. Her primary research interests are taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, and the natural history of amphibians, reptiles, and swamp eels in India. Research that Chun has authored has included the discovery and description of many new species of caecilians, frogs, lizards, and swamp eels, new genera and a new family (Chikilidae) of amphibians, as well as rediscoveries of species long thought to have been extinct. Chun is also committed to public outreach, particularly to the natives in rural parts of NER of India.
Chun will present a summary of her research on the fascinating caecilian amphibians, the world's least studied groups of vertebrates (animals with backbones), and briefly, about the professional journey that brought her to her current position as Collections Manager of Amphibians and Reptiles at the Field Museum.

Join us as we welcome Rafaela Missagia as she presents The Rise of Predatory Rats: Using New Techniques to Investigate Adaptation. Rafaela is an evolutionary biologist from Brazil and centers her research on the morphological diversity of mammals and its correlation with ecological aspects. She primarily explores the themes of morphological evolution, functional morphology, and macroevolution. Currently, her work is dedicated to investigating the adaptive aspects of predatory behavior in rodents. Rafaela is also involved in promoting gender diversity in science, being one of the founders of the Women in Science group at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.

She will present the talk Son Fronteras Politics: Contending with INS Terror in Chicago, which explores the formation of the Chicago chapter of <span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">the Center for Autonomous Social Action (CASA), one of the most important immigrant rights organizations to emerge from the Chicano Movement. CASA-Chicago youth in the 1970s conceptualized a &ldquo;sin<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">&nbsp;<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">fronteras<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">&rdquo; as a transnational imagining that brought ethnic Mexicans (and other Latinxs) together, regardless of birthplace, generation, or citizenship status.

Dr.&nbsp;Myrna Garc&iacute;a&nbsp;is an&nbsp;Associate Professor of Instruction at Northwestern University. She earned a doctorate in ethnic studies from the University of California, San Diego.&nbsp;Her&nbsp;research draws upon oral histories, archival research, and ethnographic methods to document Latinx immigration activism in Chicago during the 1970s.&nbsp;Grounded in questions of positionality, epistemology, and healing, Professor Garc&iacute;a teaches courses on social movements, knowledge production, and Latinx Chicago history. Moreover, Dr. Garc&iacute;a is passionate about teaching, meaningful community engagement, and collaborative projects to amplify Latinx Chicago histories and experiences.

<a href="https://search.asu.edu/profile/535281" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Krystal Tsosie</a> (Din&eacute;/Navajo Nation), PhD, MPH, MA, is an Indigenous geneticist-bioethicist and Assistant Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. As an advocate for Indigenous genomic data sovereignty, she co-founded the first US Indigenous-led biobank, a 501c3 nonprofit research institution called the <a href="https://nativebio.org/">Native BioData Consortium</a>
