This treatment was done in collaboration with the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma.&nbsp;

Meet a Scientist: Traditional Beadwork Techniques with Norma Robertson

At this week's session, join Rick Ree, Curator of Flowering Plants and Ryan Fuller, University of Chicago graduate student as they present their research of amazing alpine plants of the Hengduan Mountains They will have herbarium specimens, photos, and collecting tools from their studies in SW China.

The Hengduan Mountains of SW China are a biodiversity hotspot, where evolution has yielded a spectacular number of native flowering plants adapted to the challenging environmental conditions. Our research aims to document this diversity through specimen collections, and test theories about how and why so many species evolved to coexist in the region. Mountains worldwide hold a disproportionate amount of biodiversity, and the Hengduan Mountains are among the richest. Studies of species in the region help us understand why evolution favors mountains as hotspots, and is especially important as climate change threatens fragile mountain ecosystems.

Meet a Scientist: Geoscientist Andie Gomez-Patron

Liberian history holds a special connection to American and African American history that is often seldom discussed. Dr. Cynthia Schmidt will join us to give a talk about this connection through Liberian and Sierra Leonean masks and culture. By exploring the Bundu masks of the Sande women, she will draw a special cross-cultural connection with African and African American culture that will hopefully enlighten us all!&nbsp;

Dr. Cynthia Schmidt, an ethnomusicologist, has a breadth of knowledge about Africa and the Transatlantic having lived and taught as a Fulbrighter both at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, and Rhodes University, South Africa, and also at Cuttington University in Liberia. Her museum work includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, as an Andrew Mellon Fellow for African Art and Musical Instruments Departments and the Cuttington University Museum, Liberia. She was a Consultant for the Field Museum's installment of the Africa Hall Exhibition (where she has a mini-exhibit on a Mende song's legacy among the Gullah, as seen in the award-winning documentary, The Language You Cry in). Her research and publications feature her interest in cultural connections relating to Africa, the Caribbean, and the Gullah of South Carolina and Georgia. Dr. Schmidt is currently teaching at Creighton University in Omaha.

Using specimens, computer tomography scans and 3D models they will reconstruct the Mazon Creek fossil plants.

A self-taught Arabic calligrapher, Ismail Hummos has taught Arabic calligraphy in several universities. This interactive session will include a demonstration on Arabic calligraphy and discussion of the role it's played in art and architecture in the Arab world. Get the chance to try your own calligraphy and learn more about this unique art form.

Spectacular flowers of the Hengduan Mountains, China

The Hengduan Mountains of China are a biodiversity hotspot, where flowering plants have been evolving at high elevations for the past 30 million years. This has resulted in spectacular radiations of species from common ancestors, with diverse colors, shapes, and sizes of flowers that reflect different strategies for attracting pollinators during the brief summer season.

This session is held in conjunction with the Field Museum’s <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/activity/aanhpi">Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander</a> Heritage Month programming.

Meet a Scientist: Erika Hasle, Lead Conservation Ecologist

Bruno de Medeiros, Negaunee Assistant Curator of Pollinating Insects presents Surprising Pollinators.
During National <a href="https://www.pollinator.org/pollinator-week">Pollinator Week</a>, we will be showing specimens from the insect collection showing several different kinds of pollinators, highlighting species that few people know. This includes tiny midges that pollinate cacao to produce chocolate, weevils that pollinate palms to produce palm oil, flies pollinating mangoes, and many others, and several kinds of native bees.

It's Pollinator Week! This session highlights the huge diversity of insects involved in pollination.

Don't miss this special session of Meet a Scientist as Jacob Shuler, Manager of Visitor Services and Bridgette Russell, Public Relations Director, along with Heaven Wade, Research Assistant Botany, Wyatt Gaswick Collections Assistant Botany, and Christine Alexis, Visitor Services Representative come together tell the story of Juneteenth tied to our collections history.

Carrying forward the story we told last Juneteenth, we'll be focusing on the work of George Washington Carver later in his life (his Masters in mycology, his Jessup Wagon, and the pamphlets he published to educate and empower a love of gardening (particularly within African American communities) and encourage and inspire many of today's conservation and sustainability initiatives.

Meet a Scientist: Paúl Sambrano, Andes-Amazon Rapid Inventories

Jacob Campbell, Lead Social Scientist, Keller Science Action Center, is joined by Chicago based artists Hector Duarte and Piloto Nieves Ruiz. Learn about the intersection of biodiversity conservation in cities, cultural traditions, and equitable design of green spaces.&nbsp;

Hector, Piloto and Jacob will discuss the Roots &amp; Routes collaboration, made up of Field Museum, Chicago Park District, and community-based artists and organizations, that has led to the creation and activation of 5 public art installations along Chicago's south lakefront, called Gathering Spaces. Hector and Piloto will showcase specifically their installation, <a href="https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/la-ronda-parakata-artwork" target="_blank" rel="noopener">La Ronda Parakata</a>, speaking on how it integrates monarch butterfly conservation, honoring Mexican American migration, and serving as location for a unique D&iacute;a de los Muertos event, now in its 7th year.
