Summer Tween Program: Becoming a Scientist

About this recurring event

Middle-schoolers can find out what it takes to be a scientist with these summer events.

A young girl stands in front of a glass case writing notes on a clipboard. Inside the case is set of three skulls. The girl is wearing glasses and a yellow seater.

How do scientists see the world around us? What tools do they use to make discoveries about life on Earth and natural habitats and history? Preteens ages 11–14 can find out this summer with our tween events.

Saturday clubs

Join a one-day, online Saturday club from 9:30–1:30pm. Middle-school science-lovers can learn what it takes to be a field observer. They’ll hear from real scientists at work in the field across and beyond Chicago. At the end of the day, club members share what they discovered in the habitats close to home.

Every club session includes a break from 11am–12:30pm. Participants can use this time to grab lunch, play outside, and complete the midday activity. They’ll rejoin the club in the afternoon and share what they discovered in the habitats close to home.

Clubs are available all summer long: July 17, 24, 31, August 7.

One registration is required per household, per club session. Registration is $30 per class—or save with a bundle of all four classes for $100. Members enjoy a 15% discount on registration. Space is limited.

Weekday camps

Sign-up for a five-day, in-person camp inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall and work (as featured in the exhibition, Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Jane Goodall). Campers in grades 6-8 meet Monday to Friday, 9am–3pm. They’ll join Field scientists in planning, equipping, and leading their own expeditions through their local ecosystems. By the end of the week, campers will have collected specimens, observations, and impressions near their own homes.

Two sessions of tween camp are available this summer: June 21–25 August 9–13. Registration is $500. One registration is required per camper, per session. Space is limited.
