My love of old things is not confined to taking care of vertebrate fossils. I have a 66 year-old wooden sailboat which I restored and maintain myself. My two crew and I race on Saturdays out of Belmont Harbor in Chicago. My boat is called Clipper, and is a Lüders 16, a "one design" in that all the boats in the fleet are the same. This levels the playing field for competitors, resulting in success not from the best boat design (they're all the same!) but from the best sailing. My crew and I have won the season championship in Chicago for this class more than 15 times.
