You can help students of ornithology! The Student Affairs Committees of the American Ornithologists' Union and Cooper Ornithological Society organize student-centered and student-run events at our annual meetings, including workshops (on topics ranging from grant writing to data analysis techniques), social events to help students connect with professionals, and the ever-popular Quiz Bowl.  To hold these events, we need funding! Our most important fundraising event is the annual silent auction.  Generous society members and businesses donate items ranging from radio transmitters to jewelry to books.  If you would like to donate an item, please contact Stephanie Wright. All proceeds from the sale of these items go to supporting future student events at our annual meetings.  While at the meeting, please stop by to peruse the available goods and services and... don't forget to place a bid!



This informal social event will provide an opportunity for students to meet and discuss common research interests with professionals in their field. Academic and non-academic professionals from a diversity of research backgrounds will be in attendance.  Students are invited to casually move between tables throughout the event as they wish.  Dinner and drinks will be served.  This social will immediately be followed by the Quiz Bowl.  Registration is free and open to students on a first-come, first-served basis.  Space is limited.  For additional information and to RSVP, please email SPDinner.



Because the Quiz Bowl continues to grow in popularity, we are continuing with last year's format to allow for more teams.  Teams of three will be invited to compete in an initial round of "pub-style" trivia, wherein any member of the audience can form a team and participate.  We will ask questions of the entire audience, who will write down their answers and submit them.  After three rounds of pub-style trivia, the top three teams will compete in a Jeopardy-style round for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The only requirements for participating are that you show up, grab a team score sheet, and have a fun/unique team name!  Everyone is encouraged to participate, but only student teams can advance to the final round and win prizes.  Please contact Nick Mason or Nick Block for further details.



In the spirit of the Entomological Society of America's very successful video contest, the Joint Student Affairs Committee and the conference Local Organizing Committee are sponsoring a similar contest for the AOU/COS 2013 meeting. The purpose of this contest is to give society members a chance to exhibit their research and creativity through video.

Members may submit entries in three different categories:

  • Research (showcase what you work on!)
  • Instructional (based on teaching a particular ornithological concept)
  • Open (anything ornithological goes!)

 The rules for the video contest are:

  • The maximum allowed length of the video is 3 minutes. This will be strictly enforced!
  • The videos can absolutely be collaborative endeavors.
  • At least one person submitting the video must be an AOU or COS member.
  • Videos can be "old" - the date of their production does not matter.
  • This event is NOT limited to students, but student submissions are strongly encouraged.
  • Contestants may submit up to one video per category.
  • Judges retain the right to reassign videos to a different category if deemed appropriate.
  • Videos must be submitted by 11:59 PM (CDT), August 4th.

All videos will be displayed on a dedicated YouTube channel, and the winning entries will be on display at the conference banquet.  The judging format is still to be determined; but may be voted on by conference attendees.

Winners from each category will receive a trophy and other prizes!

To submit a video in the contest, send your video to Nick Block ( using an online file sharing site such as YouSendIt,, or Dropbox.  If your video is already on YouTube, please email the link to Nick. Along with the video, you must email Nick the video's title, description, and category.  All file formats that are compatible with YouTube will be accepted.
