Teen Volunteers

Teens share their love of science with the public through our volunteer programs.

For current high school students

Teen volunteers bring the Museum to life for visitors of all ages.

Teens must commit to volunteer at least 10 days throughout the summer to successfully complete the program and qualify to apply for future year-round volunteering.

Where you’ll work

Teen volunteers spend their days engaging visitors and sharing science stories throughout the museum.  While volunteering, teens split their time between the Crown Family PlayLab and facilitating interpretive carts in Stanley Field Hall.

In the PlayLab, volunteers are trained to interact with young learners in a hands-on educational setting, facilitate drop-in programming, and help keep the space running smoothly. When facilitating interpretive carts, teens showcase objects and specimens from the museum’s collections for museum visitors.

Application process

Teens must be current high school students at the time of application.

There is limited capacity for the teen volunteer program. All participants are expected to apply and interview prior to acceptance in the program.  Our teen volunteers are outgoing, adaptable, and love learning about the world around them.  Interested teens should demonstrate a strong interest in the sciences and/or early childhood education.  Bilingual skills are a plus.

Applications are open from January 2026  to February 28th, 2026.  Selected interview candidates are expected to interview in late March or early April 2026.  Teens will be notified of final selections by May 8th, 2026.

For students starting high school

Graduating eighth graders are encouraged to participate in museum activities through our storytelling programs.
