Sound Planet 2013

Sound Planet was an intensive one-week sound design workshop that investigated the field of Anthropology through the lens of music. In this program, teens explored how cultures around the world have created instruments and music that is reflective of their history and environment. Students explored sounds and music throughout the Museum’s exhibitions and behind the scenes in the Museum’s collections. Anthropology Collections Manager Chris Philipp, introduced students to the breadth and depth of instruments at the Museum and explained the cultural context in which these instruments were created and played. Throughout the week, students recorded sounds from instruments both in the Museum and those that students made themselves. The teens used the sounds they recorded to craft their own ethnographic sound map, a sound experience that tells the story of the student’s community and life. This program is a collaboration with The Pearson Foundation's New Learning Institute.
