    Northerly Island photo update

Here are a few photos of what Northerly Island--the former Meigs Field--looks like as of 30 September 2014. Most of the park remains behind a construction fence. There is now a lagoon on the southeast side of the park, which could have great birding potential depending on the landscape design when the park is finished.  Many trees have been planted and a series of small hills have been constructed. Construction is ongoing and, to my eye, looks a long way from completion. According to a 2012 mayor's office press release, the park was supposed to be reopened in the spring of 2014, a deadline that has long since passed. After a press tour led by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in June, the Chicago Tribune reported that "the area is set to be partially open to the public this fall." Northerly Island has never been completely closed, so it's unclear what exactly that refers to. The website of Studio Gang, the firm entrusted with the re-design of the park, says that Phase I will be completed in 2015. When the park will reopen completely, it seems, is anybody's guess.
