The inequities within the STEM fields is an issue that is felt deeply by many of us. Supporting women and encouraging their continued involvement in these fields will benefit our entire world. Too many bright young students are discouraged and dissuaded from pursuing their passions. We recently expanded our financial support from funding fellowships for doctoral candidates to include paid internships for collegiate and high school young women. Offering these opportunities to engage with and learn from Field scientists help assure that the next generation of young women continue to be inspired and hopeful for a positive future in the sciences.

Join us at the Field Museum on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10am-2pm for a professional learning opportunity designed to engage educators in deep content learning with the Museum&rsquo;s collections, with particular emphasis on the Cyrus Tang Hall of China. This program will support educators teaching about migration patterns in both historical and contemporary contexts.
With these contemporary connections, the session also will help educators bring Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) narratives into their classrooms. This workshop will include content and practical strategies to meet the requirements of the TEAACH Act.
Together, we will explore the questions:

<li>In what ways do images and objects act as "texts" that tell stories about how people live, think, and interact with their environment and each other?</li>
<li>What does it mean to be culturally responsive in our inquiry, and how do the questions we ask shape the stories we tell about the past and present?</li>
<li>Why do people move from one place to another, and how have those reasons changed or stayed the same over time?</li>
<li>What can the study of ancient and modern travel teach us about connection, exchange, and adaptation?</li>
<li>In what ways are historical patterns of Chinese migration reflected in contemporary immigration experiences?</li>

Meet Maxwell London, Collections Assistant in Herpetology, and check out unique frog specimens from the museum&rsquo;s collections. Discover how adaptations over time have resulted in some truly bizarre frogs and understand the importance of frogs to the ecosystems of the world. You&rsquo;ll learn how frogs are a critical part of the food web and how they are often used as bioindicators due to their extreme sensitivity to environmental changes.

Meet Dr. Almira Astudillo Gilles, Research Associate, and Jamie Kelly, McCarter Collections Manager of Anthropology at the Field Museum, as they showcase curated objects from the museum&rsquo;s Philippine collection and present highlights of Dr Gilles&rsquo; recent ethnoastronomy research in the Philippines.

Bats and batfishes may share a name, but they couldn&rsquo;t be more different in where and how they live! Bats are flying mammals that soar through the night skies, while batfishes are quirky-looking ocean dwellers with flat bodies and &ldquo;arm-like&rdquo; fins that help them walk along the seafloor. One thrives in the air, the other under the waves, yet both show how wonderfully strange and adaptable animals can be in their own habitats.&nbsp;
Come meet Lauren Johnson, Assistant Collections Manager of Mammals; Susan Mochel, Assistant Collections Manager of Fishes; Sophie Picq, Environmental DNA Research Scientist; and Linnea Lungstrom, PhD Candidate, Evolutionary Biology, and learn about these hauntingly mysterious animals.

To celebrate, Huehuecoyotl performers will visit the PlayLab before their museumwide presentation to meet with guests, discuss their regalia, chat about celebration days, and even teach a few dance steps.</li>
<li>11:00am&ndash;11:30am Starr Chief Eagle will provide an interactive and educational dive into Lakota Culture that will explore the language, art, and knowledge of the Lakota people. &nbsp;During her presentation, she will perform the rare tradition of Hoop Dancing in which she uses 22 hoops to create several designs, shapes, and creatures to tell a story.</li>

Join the Field Museum and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation for an inspiring, hands-on educator institute that connects global biodiversity challenges to local action. Begin with a deep dive into the species that comprise the dynamic ecosystems found in regional prairie environments. Then engage with fellow educators through a collaborative design challenge where you will use the Half-Earth Project Map, real-world data, and local knowledge to develop land-use strategies that best support both people and wildlife. Finally, explore ways and acquire resources that will help you bring action-oriented biodiversity conservation to your students.
Participants will receive professional development hours, classroom-ready materials, guidance, and resources that can be adapted to meet the needs of all learners in a variety of settings, a copy of E.O. Wilson's Half-Earth, and more!

Registration is open to formal and informal educators of all levels. Illinois Educators will earn 5.5 hours of Professional Development for attending this workshop.

Join the CPS Department of Social Science and Field Museum at the <a href="https://www.puitak.org/">Pui Tak Center</a> in Chinatown on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 8:30am-2pm for an engaging professional learning opportunity designed to help educators bring Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) narratives into their classrooms. This workshop will explore practical strategies to meet the requirements of the TEAACH Act as we reflect upon the questions:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">How has the Chinese American community shaped, and how does it continue to shape, Chicago?&nbsp;</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">In what way has race-based exclusion of Chinese immigrants impacted the formation &ndash; and even current location/boundaries &ndash; of ethnic enclaves such as Chicago&rsquo;s Chinatown?&nbsp;</li>

<li>Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted into a Dozin' with the Dinos event. Families and groups with children under the age of 6 may be asked to leave the event without a refund.</li>
<li>Adults may not attend Dozin' with the Dinos without a child between the ages of 6-12. If you attend the event and do not have children in your party, you will be asked to leave the event without a refund.</li>
<li>If you've purchased tickets incorrectly by mistake, you have until 2 weeks prior to the event to request a refund. After the two week period no refunds will be given, and you will not be admitted to the event.</li>

In the 1960s, the world knew little about wild African elephants &mdash; until Scottish biologist and Save the Elephants founder, Iain Douglas-Hamilton, arrived in Tanzania. His groundbreaking research in Manyara was the first in-depth study of wild African elephant behavior. The Soiree at the Gala (formerly EVOLVE) is a vibrant evening of music, dancing, and science, tailored for Chicago's young professionals and hosted by the Field Museum's Young Professionals Board. Proceeds from the event support the Museum&rsquo;s community programs, exhibitions, groundbreaking scientific research, and more!

On Saturday, October 18, 2025, Soiree guests enjoyed signature cocktails and curated hors d'oeuvres during a special reception with exclusive after-hours access to the Museum&rsquo;s exhibitions. Following the reception, they joined the Board of Trustees and Women's Board of the Field Museum in Stanley Field Hall for dessert, a top-shelf open bar, and dancing. Throughout the evening, guests were invited to explore more exhibitions and bid on exclusive items and experiences in the silent auction. &nbsp;
