Join a committed group of lifelong learners working to ensure a strong future for the Field Museum.
The Women’s Board is a community of nearly 200 civic-minded members who raise more than $2 million each year to support the Field Museum and programs that encourage young women to pursue an interest in science and STEM careers.
Women’s Board members gather quarterly for business meetings that include behind-the-scenes tours and inspiring presentations by Museum experts. Members also enjoy exclusive events, lead community outreach with partner Chicago Public Schools, and host two signature Museum events: the annual Field Museum Gala and the Women in Science Luncheon.
The Women’s Board shapes the Field Museum’s future through philanthropy, advocacy, volunteer leadership, and a steadfast commitment to scientific exploration.

Membership
Women's Board members are dedicated partners in championing the Museum's mission. Each member makes a meaningful, unrestricted gift of $2,500 or more, fully tax-deductible, to advance scientific discovery and understanding. Members also support the signature annual events, including the Gala and the Women in Science Luncheon, through table or ticket purchases while contributing their time, expertise, and leadership throughout the year.

History
The Women’s Board was established in 1966 by Ellen Thorne Smith, whose 40 years of service to the Field Museum began as a volunteer in the Birds Department. During World War II, she was appointed Associate Curator of Ornithology and later became the Museum’s first female Trustee. Her leadership, alongside the original 155 members of the Women’s Board, laid the foundation for 60 years of partnership between the Field Museum and Chicago women dedicated to scientific excellence, exploration, and education.
Today, the group remains a vital force for fundraising and advocacy, raising nearly $3 million each year in support of the Field Museum’s mission to connect all of us to the natural world and the human story. Committed to advancing Field Museum science for decades to come, the Board will continue to expand the Museum’s impact and spark curiosity in Chicago and around the world.
