The Field Museum

Come meet Sophie Shrand, creator and host of the popular web series Science with Sophie. This fun, interactive session introduces the concept of combining science and comedy to create social change. Sophie will discuss how she uses comedy as a learning tool, how STEM skills are life skills, and how, when we put them together, we can find innovative ways to solve problems.
Sophie Shrand is an award-winning TV host, STEM educator, filmmaker, and entrepreneur with degrees in Behavioral Neuroscience and Theater. Her Telly Award-winning science comedy series Science with Sophie, aimed at increasing representation of women and girls in STEM, reaches 2 million families worldwide. She also hosts the web series Theory of Awesome, and is currently producing a documentary series, Sophie's Great American Electric Road Trip, in which she drove an electric car from Los Angeles to Boston and back to test sustainable travel, connect with people across the country, and find hope amidst the climate crisis. Her work has been featured by Nat Geo Kids, NPR, Scholastic, TIME for kids, and many more.

Join us for a gripping evening of film, science, and conversation as we watch an advance screening of The Python Hunt&mdash;a documentary from Artists Equity that dives deep into the connection between the ecological crisis in the Florida Everglades and invasive Burmese pythons.
Every year, the Florida government calls upon the general public to compete in an invasive python removal contest in the Everglades in an attempt to save the threatened ecosystem. For ten grueling nights, an eclectic group of amateur hunters confront the dangerous terrain, nocturnal creatures and their own tiny demons. Meanwhile, one professional hunter leads the charge to undermine the competition, questioning what hides beneath the python mania gripping the &lsquo;glades. The Python Hunt is Artists Equity&rsquo;s third documentary feature, following U2&rsquo;s Kiss the Future and Jennifer Lopez&rsquo;s The Greatest Love Story Never Told.
A thought-provoking panel discussion will follow the screening, featuring important voices from the film, including director Xander Robin, and Field Museum. Together, they&rsquo;ll unpack the complex ethics of wildlife management, the challenges of invasive species, and how research at the Field Museum supports conservation work locally and globally.

This workshop will explore practical strategies to meet the requirements of the TEAACH Act as we reflect upon the questions:

Summer of SUE

Since their unveiling in 2000, SUE the T. rex has been studied by scientists around the world, yet mysteries remain about the Field&rsquo;s most famous fossil. What caused holes to form on SUE&rsquo;s lower jaw and what can this tell us about how they lived and died? Join paleontologist Jingmai O&rsquo;Connor, Curator of Fossil Reptiles, as she shares some of the mysteries about SUE the T. rex scientists are continuing to solve, and hear how she and her team were able to prove one of the most popular theories about the cause of holes in their lower jaw&ndash;that they suffered an infection from a protozoan parasite&ndash;couldn&rsquo;t be true.

This session takes a deep dive into dicynodont tusk fossils...and all the amazing biological information preserved inside. Join us as we look at 240 million-year-old dicynodont tusks and "thin-sections" under a microscope to uncover how these creatures lived and grew.

Freshwater mussels serve as "livers" for the aquatic ecosystem, filtering out algae, pollutants, and even some viruses. Meet Sean Keogh, Collections Manager of Invertebrate Zoology, and view shells and fluid preserved specimens from the museum's collection to learn about the natural history of freshwater mussels and the vital ecological role they play in the health of our rivers.

On the first Tuesday evening of every month, experience the Museum after hours with discounted All-Access admission.

The Field Museum is the perfect place to meet up after work, grab a drink with friends, and travel the world together through our exhibitions. After 5 at the Field offers discounted All Access admission, including Reptiles Alive!, the Chicago Archaeopteryx, and all your Field favorites (excluding the Grainger Science Hub, Crown Family PlayLab, and 3D Theater).

All workshops include parking and free admission to the museum for the day . These workshops are available for adults ages 18+ and open to all skill levels. Space is very limited, and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. All registrations will be confirmed by email.&nbsp;

With our expert photographer, learn how to capture striking images, focusing on lighting and enhancements that are at your fingertips. Whether you're a beginner or looking to level up your mobile photography, this class will sharpen your eye and help you capture stunning images&mdash;no fancy equipment required.&nbsp;

This year the Field celebrates the 25th anniversary of SUE the T. rex&rsquo;s arrival at the museum. Join us for an exciting professional development opportunity for Pre-K-12th grade educators.

See live specimens of arachnids (spiders and Opiliones or &ldquo;daddy long-legs&rdquo;) and learn about their ecology, behavior, and biomechanics from the scientists who study them. Discover the critical role these common animals play in the environment and what we can do to protect them.
Presenters include <a href="https://iescalante.weebly.com/">Ignacio Escalante</a>, Assistant Professor, Marilia Freire, PhD, and Sejal Prachand, Sage DeLong, and Noah Skelly, Behavioral Ecology &amp; Biomechanics Lab, University of Illinois-Chicago.
