About this event
Bats and batfishes may share a name, but they couldn’t be more different in where and how they live! Bats are flying mammals that soar through the night skies, while batfishes are quirky-looking ocean dwellers with flat bodies and “arm-like” fins that help them walk along the seafloor. One thrives in the air, the other under the waves, yet both show how wonderfully strange and adaptable animals can be in their own habitats.
Come meet Lauren Johnson, Assistant Collections Manager of Mammals; Susan Mochel, Assistant Collections Manager of Fishes; Sophie Picq, Environmental DNA Research Scientist; and Linnea Lungstrom, PhD Candidate, Evolutionary Biology, and learn about these hauntingly mysterious animals.
NOTE: This session will include animal preparation and dissection by Field Museum Collections staff.
Scientists, researchers, and collections managers are behind the scenes every day, uncovering new information and taking care of our collection.
During Meet a Scientist, you can find them in the Grainger Science Hub. They'll discuss their work and share real items from the museum’s collection of nearly 40 million objects. From collections care to field work, and dinosaurs to ecology, there’s a world of science to explore.
Visit the Science Hub on select weekdays for an up-close look at what our researchers do every day.
