Andes-Amazon Program
The Andes–Amazon Program of the Keller Science Action Center works to protect one of the most culturally and biologically diverse regions on Earth. Our approach blends ecological, social, and Indigenous sciences to support lasting conservation outcomes—from new protected areas to the recognition of Indigenous territories. Guided by strong partnerships and a commitment to science-to-action, we help decision-makers and frontline communities secure landscapes that sustain both biodiversity and human well-being.
The Andes-Amazon Region
We leverage transdisciplinary science and community engagement to help local entities establish vast protected landscapes and ensure the long-term effectiveness, durability, and social benefits of conservation in the region.
Since 1999, our team has advanced Rapid Inventories —a collaborative model that brings together ecologists, social scientists, and Indigenous experts for swift, targeted expeditions. In just a few weeks, these teams generate actionable knowledge about remote forests and rivers, documenting species richness and community priorities alike. To date, we have carried out 33 rapid inventories, contributing directly to the protection of more than 29.2 million acres of forests and rivers and the discovery of over 330 species new to science.
Our approach is guided by a commitment to intercultural science, where ecological, social, and Indigenous knowledge systems are equally valued. This transdisciplinary approach reveals a fuller picture of critical landscapes and underpins durable conservation outcomes such as the designation of national parks, Indigenous territories, extractive reserves, and managed concessions—diverse legal frameworks that safeguard land and water while supporting community livelihoods.
Partnership is at the heart of everything we do. Working with Indigenous federations, NGOs, universities, and government agencies, we co-create knowledge and translate it into conservation strategies that respect local priorities. We ensure diverse and local engagement and equitable partnerships from the outset to build resilient conservation outcomes. Together, we are charting pathways toward conservation that are both scientifically sound and socially just, and securing landscapes of global importance for generations to come.

Keller Science Action Center

Backed by more than three decades of experience from Amazonia to Chicago, we center local stewards, lead research, and help safeguard large, at-risk landscapes. We elevate local solutions for sustained conservation results and deliver bold solutions that protect nature and improve quality of life.
